Fighting with this character: Sure. James is skilled with a wand - he's a great duellist - but he probably isn't the best when it comes to throwing punches and kicking ass. He can probably throw a few good ones, but he probably won't dominate the fight. He will never cast any of the Unforgiveables - so he won't go to extreme lengths to seriously maim your character.
